FLIGHT BOOKING HELP • PASSENGER DETAILS • INDIA
You open the e-ticket and notice that a woman in your family is marked “Mr” or “Male,” or a man is shown as “Ms.” The name is correct, the flight is approaching, and the correction screen appears to demand a large payment. Before cancelling or buying another ticket, slow the problem down. A title or gender marker, a spelling error, a different passenger name, and a passport mismatch are not the same issue. Airlines and booking portals may route them through different processes.
This guide uses a ticket-triage approach: identify exactly what is wrong, preserve the original booking, contact the party able to edit it, and insist on a written breakdown before paying. Policies differ by airline, route and issuing channel, so the purpose is to help you ask precise questions rather than promise that every correction will be free.
The five-minute ticket triage
Place the e-ticket beside the identity document that will be used for travel. For a domestic flight, that may be an accepted government photo ID. For an international flight, compare the ticket with the passport’s biographical page and machine-readable zone. Check every passenger separately. Do not rely on the booking app’s family profile because saved details may differ from the issued ticket.
| What is wrong? | Treat it as | First evidence to send |
|---|---|---|
| Mr/Ms or gender marker only | Title or passenger-detail correction | Redacted ID and issued ticket |
| One to three letters misspelt | Minor name correction | ID showing the same passenger |
| First and surname reversed | Name-format correction | Passport page and ticket |
| Entirely different person | Passenger transfer, often prohibited | Fare rules before taking action |
| Wrong date of birth or document number | Travel-document data correction | Correct document and booking record |
A wrong title is not automatically a new passenger
The most important distinction is identity. If the full name belongs to the same traveller and only the title or gender field is wrong, describe it as a title or gender-marker correction. Do not ask for a “name change” unless the name is actually wrong. “Name change” can sound like transferring the ticket to another person, which many airlines prohibit.
Air India’s published name-format policy, for example, lists title amendments as a non-chargeable correction and requires corrections to remain for the same passenger. That is useful evidence for an Air India itinerary, but it is not a universal rule for every carrier. On a codeshare, the marketing airline, operating airline and ticketing carrier may have different technical limits. International journeys can also involve immigration data that must match the passport.
Follow the ticket, not the logo on the app
Find the ticket number, PNR, operating carrier and the organisation that issued or collected payment. A direct airline booking is normally handled by that airline. A ticket bought through an online travel agency may need to be serviced by the agency, even when the airline confirms the policy. Air India’s published guidance tells passengers with portal or agent bookings to contact the relevant agency for corrections. IndiGo’s conditions similarly direct agency-booked changes through the travel agent in specified situations.
- Direct booking: open the airline’s official Manage Booking page and contact its published support channel.
- Portal or travel agent booking: raise one written case with the seller and obtain the case number.
- Codeshare: ask which carrier controls the ticket and whether the operating carrier must approve the correction.
- International itinerary: mention every segment and transit country; do not assume a domestic answer covers the entire journey.
Use the first 24 hours intelligently
Report the error immediately, even if departure is months away. India’s DGCA Civil Aviation Requirements revised in February 2026 state that an airline should not add a charge for correcting the name of the same person when the error is reported within 24 hours and the ticket was booked directly on the airline website. The rule’s wording and booking-channel condition matter. It does not mean every portal must perform every type of correction free, and it does not erase a fare difference caused by changing the flight or booking class.
Take a screenshot of the issued ticket, the time you noticed the error and the first support request. If the app offers cancellation as the only visible button, do not press it simply to “start over” until you know the refundable amount and the current replacement fare. A correction request may preserve the original fare, while cancellation and rebooking can expose you to both a deduction and a higher new fare.
The exact message to send
Subject: Same-passenger title/gender correction for PNR [masked reference]. The passenger’s full name is correctly shown as [name exactly as on ID], but the ticket displays [incorrect title or gender] instead of [correct detail]. This is not a transfer to another traveller and no itinerary change is requested. Please confirm whether the correction is required for travel, which system field will be updated, the applicable policy, and any charge before processing. I have attached a redacted copy of the relevant ID and e-ticket. Please issue a corrected itinerary or written confirmation that the existing ticket is valid.
Mask the ID number where possible and use only the company’s official upload or support channel. Never send an OTP, PIN or full payment-card image. Keep the original files privately in case the airline later needs to verify them.
If the quote looks excessive, ask these six questions
- Is this being classified as a title correction, minor name correction, reissue, cancellation, or a new ticket?
- Which airline or agency rule authorises the amount?
- How much is an administrative fee, airline fee, agency fee and fare difference?
- Will the flight, date, cabin or booking class change?
- Can the airline place a correction remark in the booking instead of reissuing it?
- Will every segment remain confirmed after the action?
A single total such as “USD 450” does not explain the service. Request the calculation in writing and ask the airline for its policy separately when an agent issued the ticket. The airline may confirm what is technically possible while still directing the seller to perform it. Do not repeatedly open new cases with different descriptions; contradictions make reconciliation harder.
What must be correct before you leave home
The passenger’s identity must be unambiguous. Air India states that the name on the e-ticket should match the valid identification presented for airport entry, check-in and boarding. For international travel, the passport name, nationality, date of birth, document number, expiry date and visa information deserve special attention. A corrected title on a PDF is not enough if the underlying passenger record still contains wrong document data.
- Download the newly issued itinerary rather than relying on a chat promise.
- Retrieve the PNR on the airline’s official website and verify every segment.
- Check that the ticket number remains active and the booking shows confirmed.
- Confirm seats, meals and paid baggage if the ticket was reissued.
- Carry the same ID or passport used for the correction request.
- Reach the airport early if support has placed a remark but not issued a new document.
Escalate with a correction record, not accusations
If the seller and airline send you back and forth, place both statements in one timeline: booking time, discovery time, first report, requested correction, quoted charge and each party’s response. Ask the portal’s grievance officer for a reasoned written decision. Airline-related grievances may be submitted through AirSewa. The National Consumer Helpline is a Department of Consumer Affairs pre-litigation channel available through its portal and helpline 1915.
Describe only verifiable facts. A booking screen default or technical error can be challenged without declaring fraud. The useful remedy is specific: correct the same passenger’s details, confirm travel validity, explain the fee, or refund an amount that the applicable terms require. If departure is very close, prioritise a workable travel solution while preserving your right to dispute a charge later.
A prevention routine for family bookings
Delete outdated passenger profiles before a major booking. Enter each name from the document rather than memory, then read the review screen aloud person by person. Check title, date of birth and passport expiry as well as spelling. Save the fare rules and correction policy before payment. When the confirmation arrives, open it immediately; the first few minutes may be the easiest time to repair an error.
